1985 batch IAS officer Mr. Sutirtha Bhattacharya has been appointed as new CMD of Coal India Limited, the world’s largest miner. The Public enterprises Section Board had recommended Mr. S Bhattacharya in November 2014 from a list of 12 candidates. He was the CMD of Singareni Collieries Company Limited, Hyderabad, the second largest coal mining company after Coal India Limited.

Mr. Bhattacharya will be replacing AK Dubey who was given the additional charge as CMD of Coal India Limited from June 2006. This ends 6 months of uncertainty since S Narasing Rao, an IAS officer of 1986 from Andhra Pradesh Cadre quit the position in May to join the Telangana Government.
Finally state run Coal India Limited will get a full time chairman.
Coal India Limited is a schedule ‘A’ Navaratna Public Sector Undertaking under Ministry of Coal, Government of India having its head office in Kolkata, West Bengal. The company operates mines in major coal fields across India, including open cast mines, underground mines and mixed mines.
