The Holy Cave shrine of Mata Vaishno Devi or Trikuta Bhagwati is dedicated to the Goddess Shakti. Affectionately also called as Mata Rani and Vaishnavi.
Mata Vaishno Devi shrine is in Trikuta Mountain of north Jammu located at a height of 5300 feet. To reach the Holy shrine you need to travel to Katra. Katra is 50 kilometers away from Jammu and 630 kilometers from Delhi.
As most tourists are visiting from New Delhi, in this article we will let you know how to visit the holey shrine from New Delhi.
To reach Vaishno Devi temple, you have to first travel from Delhi to Jammu and then from Jammu to Katra.
Delhi to Jammu can be traveled by train or bus. If you are planning to travel by train then you need to book tickets at least one month before your travel date.
Trains like New Delhi to Jammu Tawi express (Train No: 12425), Uttar sampark kranti express (Train No: 12445) are available from New Delhi railway station to Jammu Tawi station.
You can check train status at Indian rail website and book your tickets from IRCTC.
By train, you can travel up to Jammu and then from Jammu you need to take a taxi till the bus stop to catch a bus up to katra. Buses to katra leave every 10 minutes between 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM.
Buses are plying to Katra (Vaishno Devi) every day and need not be booked in advance. You can get buses from ISBT Kashmiri gate in Delhi. Both ordinary and Volvo bushes are available. Booking can also be done online through travel portals like redbus, Makemytrip.
If you are traveling by bus from Delhi then make sure that the bus goes to Katra not Jammu otherwise you have to change your bus at Jammu to reach Katra.
After reaching katra you can walk up to the foothill of Trikuta Mountain and start your journey to Mata Vaishno Devi.
From base of the mountain, Vaishno Devi temple is in 14.5 kilometers distance. You can go by walk or can take help of horse back or dolly (seat carried by porters) to climb up to that.
To enjoy the beauty of Trikuta Mountain and nearby scenery we suggest you to go by walk. You can start your journey overnight and reach at the top of the mountain early morning. Early morning view from Bhairo Baba temple is amazing.
Shrine is opened 24/7 throughout the year. Do not take any belongings as you need to go through security checks in between.
Nearest airport is Jammu. Daily flights by Goair, Indigo and other domestic carriers are available between Jammu and Delhi. You can hire private taxis from Jammu airport to reach katra.
Helicopter services from Katra to Sanjichhat which is very nearer to Vaishno Devi temple are also available at a price of Rs. 1600 per person. It takes approximately 8 minutes to reach there.
Hotels at Vaishno Devi Shrine
Yatri Niwas maintained by the Vaishno Devi shrine board, J&K tourism department’s rest house and various other private hotels are available at the foothill. Dharmashals are also available at a cheaper price.
